It’s no secret that Canadians love poutine. It’s a comfort food only we seem to understand. We love poutine so much that many city across the country host La Poutine Week, February 1-7.

La Poutine Week celebrates this delicious comfort food with competitions and reinventions of this familiar dish. Throwing their hat into the ring is this year is IBM. Their Cognitive Cooking using Watson Analytics hosted their own event with Watson created recipes. They hosted an event in Toronto and Montreal. We headed down to St. James Cathedral to see what poutine made by Watson would taste like.

Watson created 5 recipes for each city. For Toronto the choices were:

  • Chinese-Greek Chop Suey Poutine
  • Filipino-Portuguese Braised Oxtail Poutine
  • Italian-Korean Fra Diavolo Poutine
  • Japanese-Middle Eastern Onion Ring Poutine
  • Sri-Lankan Jamaican Surf and Turf Poutine
These were definitely not your average chip truck poutines. Some of them didn’t have cheese in them, and some of them didn’t even use potatoes for their fries, but they were all interesting and delicious. As of now, our favourite sits in 3rd place, the Filipino-Portuguese Braised Oxtail Poutine.
